ADVANCE Perspective: Hearing Health

A Stolen Sense of Hearing

Published September 1, 2011 1:17 PM by Rich Magda

Looking through my daily hearing-industry news feed, I came upon a story about a young South African girl who is struggling after her hearings aids were snatched from her ears. She had been playing in a park when a man walked by and committed the crime. Police believe the thief mistook the hearing aids for earplugs or a Bluetooth device.

Finding it hard to believe that a grown man would risk theft charges for a pair of pink earplugs, and wondering why he would target a four-year-old girl as a Bluetooth user, I suspect the thief saw an opportunity to make away with an expensive set of stylish hearing aids.

Considering the cost of today's hearing aid technology, it made me wonder if this time if crime is common. So I ask you: How prevalent is this problem in your practice area? What tips do you offer your patients to protect their hearing aids from theft? What other types of hearing-related technology is vulnerable to theft? Please share your experiences.

Well, I don't belive that any of us hear this in the priviledged worlds we live in other than the occassional or repeated extended care facility or nursing home situations where their might be a culprit that thinks they need the hearing aid more than the poor lady or gentleman who mistakenly laid it in their kleenex on the nightstand or dropped it on the floor.   What I have wondered and actually briefly discussed with some other acquaintances (Audiologists) while attending various conventions and/or training sessions is what really happens to the hearing aids that land in the ears of the hearing impaired people in these third world countries from these wonderful endeavors we are making from the large hearing aid corporations.  Do they leave behind  hearing aid vigilantes that are going to protect this population (children, elderly and otherwise) from the "other-side" that seems to be everywhere and have a need to desire these products for a greater end than the means?  I'LL BE YOUR VIGILANTE.  That's my sentiment only.  How could you ever control something like this happening when you provide a means to a third world economy that finds a way to selfishly and individually prosper.  Maybe I'm out of place here but I've never heard of any type of regulation or control or protection of these devices, after someone's life has been changed and opened up to a world of hearing leaves rustle, birds singing, ocean waves slapping onto a barrier reaf or moving sand through their feet...................it's a tragedy to say the least, IF it is happening.
