As a little girl, I had an obsession with the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. The scene in which the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Margaret Hamilton) gazes menacingly into her crystal ball and sneers "Poppies will put them to sleep" still sends shivers down my spine.

Despite being terrified by the Wicked Witch, I really wanted her crystal ball! It changes color like a disco light and lets you spy on your little sister. Oh, the tricks I could have played on her.

Although I never did get a crystal ball, I did pull together the latest industry research to bring you this list of promotional products industry trends to look out for in 2011.

Trend #1: A Focus on Safety. High-profile product recalls ranging from Shrek drinking glasses to the infamous Toyota recalls dominated headlines in recent years. Not surprisingly, consumers want to know more than ever how products will affect their overall health. They're particularly leery of toxin-emitting air fresheners and water bottles.
