Retain and Attract Healthcare Workers With Employee Giveaways

Published 20 January 11 05:08 PM

Applicants for jobs in the medical field have been plentiful for the past several years. So much so that healthcare recruiters reported wading through hundreds - even thousands - of applications for certain positions. That's about to change.

In the years to come, 32 million Americans who do not currently have health insurance will receive it under healthcare reforms. As a result, the healthcare industry will generate 3.2 million new wage and salary jobs between now and 2018 - more than any other industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The biggest employment growth areas will be in home health services, laboratory services and outpatient care centers. However, the shortage of qualified workers in these fields is going to get worse well before it gets better.

More than ever, healthcare recruiters will need to hold onto top talent and build relationships with prospective employees. Employee giveaways serve as small gestures that go a long way to show you care about your staff. In addition, they can help your facility stand out from a sea of booths at job fairs.

A 2004 study by L.J. Market Research found that 76 percent of people surveyed could recall a company's name on a product they received during a 12-month period. Likewise, the same percentage of survey respondents reported having a favorable attitude of the company that gave them the product.

Here are a few creative ideas on how your facility can make a lasting impression on job candidates and strengthen loyalty among existing talent with employee giveaways.

Embroidered Shirts

Maybe your department has an annual golf tournament or you've volunteered as a group to pick up litter around your facility's community. Nothing says "teamwork" better than matching shirts embroidered with your facility's name. It's the perfect thank-you gift for top employees. Plus, embroidered garments such as this women's polo shirt are more durable and easier to wash than printed items, so you can count on people wearing the promotional giveaway for years to come!

Writing Instruments

Branded pens get used 18.2 times per month on average, according to a 2010 study by the Advertising Specialty Institute. That's more than any other promotional item, including tote bags, mugs and headwear. Pens such as this CPR Barrier Pen do more than write. The pen's barrel holds a latex-free barrier shield, so rescuers can perform CPR without compromising their own safety. Simply remove the pen cap to access the pre-packaged, rolled-up barrier shield.

Overnight Gear

Finally, you can show your hospital workers you value the long hours they log in by making their time on call more comfortable. This compact toothbrush and a 5 gram tube of Colgate toothpaste come housed in a protective travel case imprinted with your logo. Sized for suitcases, purses or desk drawers, the travel toothbrush also is a convenient addition to a welcome kit when recruiting out-of-state employees.
