March is National Optimism Month!

It's National Optimism Month - a time to reflect on the power of positive thinking. A growing body of research has shed light on the ability of optimism to influence our health, success, longevity and overall well-being.

Researcher Martin Seligman, Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, found that optimistic people get more enjoyment out of life and are happier than pessimists. That's because they view hardships as learning experiences and believe they can overcome challenges through hard work and their personal abilities. Because of these traits, Seligman found that optimists are more successful than their pessimistic colleagues. They win more athletic competitions, get better grades and make more money.

The good news for pessimists is that they can learn to see the bright side of life experiences.

In the spirit of National Optimism Month, here are some of my favorite life lessons from natural optimist Regina Brett, a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She shared these words of wisdom shortly after her 50th birthday. I hope her advice inspires you as much as it did for me during National Optimism Month and beyond!

Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

When in doubt, just take the next small step.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

          Yield.

Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

You can get through anything if you stay put in today.

When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion.
          Today is special.

Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

Find out if you're a natural optimist or pessimist by taking Dr. Seligman's Optimism questionnaire. And bring a smile to your clients' faces with our National Optimism Month products.
