Sneaking a Peek?

Published October 6, 2007 9:40 PM by Lisa Algeo

A recent incident at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, WY, has sparked my interest. It seems in the past month, the hospital has fired, suspended and scolded a number of employees for violating HIPAA, according to a report on Courant.com.

As it turns out, some of these employees have been sneaking a peek at their own medical records, in addition to the records of family and friends. According to the hospital’s interim executive director, no one will be fired for looking at their own records at this point in time but a reminder has been issued to all employees that it’s against federal law to do so.

The hospital has stated that there are certain conditions and procedures that must be taken to legally look at your own medial records.

So, what’s your facility’s policy on sneaking a peek? Have you ever accessed your own records or those of your family?
