ADVANCE Perspective: HIM

If You Just Had a Little More Time

Published August 26, 2008 5:09 PM by Lynn Jusinski
It all adds up--even 5 measly minutes a day.

With all of the short-term obligations, it's easy for long-term goals and career aspirations to get lost in the melee. HIM departments are abuzz with activity--many are transitioning to EHRs or some form of hybrid records, dealing with staffing and workflow issues and still finding the time to do the day-to-day things that must get done.

If you could--or hey, if you do--take 5 minutes a day to work toward a long-term career goal, what would you do? ADVANCE will run an article in its Sept. 22 issue called "Take 5 Minutes." We're looking for readers' tips on what HIM professionals can do in 5 minutes to help achieve long-term goals and move their careers further.

We've heard from a few folks, but we'd like to hear from you. We received a lot of tips on networking, trade publications and professional organizations, so if you have anything along those lines or something different to add, feel free to drop a comment below or e-mail Cheryl McEvoy.

Here's a bit more information:

Theme: No one has time. Any coder, MT, cancer registrar or HIM director will tell you. But what if you took 5 minutes out of every day to do one thing that could move your career forward? What would you tell your colleagues, employees, or new professionals in the field to do if they could "Take 5 Minutes?"

Please provide a 4-5 sentence tip to be included in our article and read by your colleagues. The topic can be anything--from redoing your resume, to making a cheat sheet for those words you keep getting stuck on. Please try to focus on 5 minutes each day that will add up to completing a project you didn't think you had time to do!

Please include the following:

Name, credentials:

Title:

Place of employment, city and state:

Take 5 Minutes Tip:

We're planning to run the article in our Sept. 22 issue, so we'd like to get all tips and advice in on or before Tuesday, Sept. 2. We look forward to hearing from you!
