Labor Day

Published September 2, 2008 5:50 PM by Carol Dantzler-Harris, MEd, RHIA, CPC
The Labor Day holiday marks the end of those carefree days of summer. If you haven't hit the beach this summer, this will probably be your last chance. If you are into barbequing, today will be the last day you can use a holiday as an excuse to bring out the grill. I love riding through the neighborhood and smelling the wonderful smells of the barbeque grill. Labor Day used to be a day in which people went to parades, cookouts or to the beach. Doing anything that resembled work was not in the cards.

Well, all traditions come to an end. I am spending the day working on grading papers, answering emails, and working on my classes for next semester. My neighbors are mowing their lawns and working out in the yard. My hubby used this day off to catch up on yard work. The only people relaxing on this day are my kids. They are enjoying their day off and have indulged in their many past times. This includes catching up on their computer games and their favorite television shows.

On Sunday, I take the day off and reserve it for spending time with my family. I felt extremely guilty about taking another day off. So, I am using this holiday to stay ahead of the game. I tried to take some time and relax today but my mind would not take the day off. I was constantly thinking about all the things that I could do before I return to work this week. My thinking is you never know what might happen to get you off track.

By the end of the day, I will have completed several tasks that will put my mind at ease. At least for a little while, I can feel less anxious about my deadlines. Happy Labor Day!
