CPC Test Prep

Published October 13, 2008 8:16 AM by Carol Dantzler-Harris, MEd, RHIA, CPC

I have started preparations to take the AAPC coding certification examination.  As I mentioned in last week's article, the community college where I teach wants me to take the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) exam.  I have been to the AAPC web site several times to prepare myself to take the examination.

The first order of business is to complete the application process.  The candidate can complete the online application to speed things up.  In addition to completing the application, the candidate must have two letters of references from former employers which confirms that the candidate has coding experience.   I have contacted my former employer to have them write a letter to the AAPC on my behalf.  My boss at the community college will also write a letter confirming my coding experience.   Once I receive the letters, I will be able to submit the application process and wait for approval to take the exam.

There are resources on the AAPC website to prepare the candidate to take the exam.  There are also coding classes to prepare you for the exam.  I will be attending a certification review next month to prepare for the exam.  The coordinator of the certification review recommends that I purchase the CPC exam guide.  The review will be centered around the exam guide which simulates the CPC exam.  The test is divided into three sections: Section 1 : Surgery/Modifiers, Section 2: Evaluation/Management, Anesthesia, Radiology, Laboratory/Pathology and Medicine; Section 3:Medical Concepts.  You must pass all three sections to pass the examination.

I have started to review the exam guide and I feel confident about some sections.   Some of the exam review guide was a review of material that I know quite well.  Other areas concern me because I have not worked with them enough.  I have not had to sit for a certification exam in twenty years. I remember how nerve wrecking the whole process was.  My professional future depended on passing the exam.

The difference then and now is that I have years of experience in health information management.  I cannot rely on this alone to be successful.  I will have to develop a study strategy that works best for me.  Next, week I will share my study strategy to pass the exam.

After years of experience, I too have decided to prepare for the CPC exam. I was feeling pretty confident after taking the pre-test provided with the CPC study guide and getting 70% before studying. As I read these post, I'm finding that I am feeling a bit nervous and actually looking at the possibility of failing (which would drive me batty).

I am planning to take the test in Sept. 09 - That should give me plenty of time to study. The tip in Carol's blog about starting the application process now is a good one - I hadn't thought about needing to start that earlier than end of July - early August.

Just wish I would have found this site sooner - it looks informative and friendly. (bookmark)

I took the CPC-P test on Dec 13th, 2008-didn't pass it. I don't know what sections I didn't pass yet because I haven't received anything in the mail yet. Hopefully i will soon becaused I have rescheduled to take it again 02/21/09. I just don't know where to get all of the info that we need to study for this. I do have the CPC study guide but the CPC-P one doesn't come out until 04/01/09. If you passed, what suggestions would you offer to me. I am used to doing the physicians side of coding not the hospital side so some of those I had to guess. So please help with any suggestions.

I am taking the CPC P exam on 12/13/08.  There are no study guides for this specific exam.  I've already taken it once and passed 2 of the 3 sections, failed insurance section. Any last minute advice from anyone who has passed this exam would be appreciated.

thanks

I took the CPC exam on 11-15-08 in NY  I feel it is best to start out with section 3.  Either you know the anatomy/medical term or your don't.  Sections 1 and 2 are more challenging.  I agree working backwards did help.  In the majority of the questions, there are two choices that just cant be right.  Focus on the two remaining answers, keeping your modifier rules in mind, and it makes things alot easier.  Keep your fingers crossed for me and good luck to the rest of you.

I need your help. I completed a certificate in Medical Coding, took AHIM boot camp and decided to go with AAPC Medical Coding certification. Then, I purchased the CPC Exam Review book/CD and studied and studied. Recently, I took the CPC exam and only got to 110 out of 150. I felt prepared, felt good about the exam content, etc. Bottomline, I thought I was doing well however ran out of time.

I have been told by a coder to take a class in "How to take a Test" (Objective test" I feel I need more tips in order to build a momentum of 40 questions to go on the exam.

Can you help me? After two years studying the program, sacrificing my lunch hour, home life, etc. I felt despaired; not sure how to proceed or to proceed. Your advice or others are welcome. I feel I need some kind of method vs trying my best to code as fast as I can. (It' didn't work for me.).

What made you choose the CPC over the CCS? Is it better to be credentialed/certified by one organization or should there be variety?

Carol,

It's a great blog you have here.  I have learned a thing or two about taking these type of exams.  If you work them backwards, from answer to problem, discounting two answers, then paying attention to the modifiers and the order of "V"s and "E"s.  You still need to know your stuff, but working it backwards does save a little time.

Carol

I teach a "Prep" course to help students go over the "Study Guide" Review to show them the easiest way of taking the Exam.  It's multiple choice - and once you learn how to rule out 2 of the answers - you're all set.  Modifiers are so very important to understand, along with "V" and "E" codes.

Remember - the Exam is timed - so do the easiest ones first - put frown faces on the tough ones so you can go back and do those later.         Go in with a POSITIVE attitude - plenty of snacks and water -- and you should be all set.
