CPC Exam Review

Published November 3, 2008 7:33 AM by Carol Dantzler-Harris, MEd, RHIA, CPC
I attended the CPC Exam Review on Friday to prepare myself to take AAPC CPC exam. The exam review was offered by the local AAPC chapter to prepare applicants to take the exam. There were about forty participants representing insurance, physician offices, hospitals, clinics, education and students. The majority of the participants were required to take the exam for employment purposes. The students need to take the exam to have better opportunities of landing their first coding job.

The instructor for the exam review is also the proctor for the CPC exam. I have been on the AAPC website to review the coding certification information but there is nothing like first hand knowledge of what to expect. The instructor gave practical test taking suggestions in addition to providing specifics about the exam.

The CPC exam is divided into three sections. Section One: Surgery and Modifiers; Section Two: Evaluation and Management, Anesthesia, Radiology, Lab & Pathology and Medicine; Section Three: Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-9-CM, HCPCS, and Practice Management. There are a total of 150 questions on the test. The AAPC allows 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete the test. The applicant must pass each section to pass the exam. Failure on one part of the exam will mean that you failed the entire exam. The applicant must score a seventy or higher on each section to pass. If you fail the test, you will be allowed to retake it within 12 months free of charge. After the second time, you must pay the application fee to take the test.

There were participants at the review who had taken the test before and had to retake it because they did not pass one section of the test. They did extremely well on the other sections of the test but failed one section by just a few points. I asked the instructor what the national passing rate was for the AAPC. She did not know the national average but did say that the local chapters results were not good. This did not make me feel better. It only increased my level of anxiety.

The instructor informed participants of how the questions might be asked on the exam. She asked us a couple of questions and our brain turned to mush. She was trying to illustrate the point that you must read every question carefully or you will be thrown off track. She informed us on what the AAPC will allow us to mark in our coding books. She cautioned against excessive highlighting in our coding books. She recommended reading the CPT guidelines in the front of each section in the code book. This way you will already know the guidelines and will not have to waste time looking up the guidelines in the book during the test. The same is true of ICD-9 guidelines.

Here are tips for preparing for the AAPC CPC exam:

  • Study two to four hours a day
  • Know the CPT, ICD-9 coding guidelines
  • Read and review the CPC exam review guide
  • Complete the Pre-test and Post-test on the CPC exam review guide
  • Complete the Mock AAPC test in your CPC exam review guide
  • Practice CPT, ICD-9, HCPCS coding
  • Use flash cards to review medical terminology
  • Use the CPC exam review to study anatomy/physiology
  • Stop studying at least 3 to 4 days before your exam
  • Only the AMA CPT code book will be allowed for the exam. (You must have the current year.) You will not be allowed to take the exam will an old code book.
  • AMA Professional CPT book is recommended (because of the extensive diagrams, color coding, and tabs)
  • The ICD-9 and HCPCS code books can be published by any source but must be the current year's text.
  • Allow 2 minutes per question on the exam (medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, practice management) You will need more than 2 minutes on the actual coding questions
  • Take your breaks as scheduled
  • Bring several sharpened #2 pencils
  • Bring plastics rulers to use as bookmarks
  • Bring bottled water, snacks
  • Read each question carefully
  • Skip questions that you don't know and come back to them later
  • Review the bubble test card to be sure that you marked all answers
  • Relax it's finally over!

With any luck you might be successful taking the exam. The instructor pointed out that participants who use the CPC Exam review guide have a better success rate passing the exam. The author of the review guide developed the AAPC curriculum and develops test questions for the exam. I already have my CPC Exam review guide and have gone through it once. Let's hope that I am part of the successful group!

I will be taking my CPC exam in November. I just got finished last weekend with a CPC boot camp. It was a LONG 3 days but I think it will help me in the long run. If you can get your company to pay for it that would be great because they run about 1500.00. The one book they gave us was "CPC coding exam review" by Carol J. Buck. If you cant go to boot camp BUY THIS BOOK. It has 3 exams for you to practice on. 2 are on cd and the final is in the book. The final in the book is about the closest I have seen as compared to the real test!!  Study your terms and know your body parts. Take your CPC book and the ICD-9 and TAB them, it really makes a difference when your flipping around trying to find a code. remember time is not your friend. 5 1/2 hours goes by  before you know it.

I'll be taking the CPC Exam end of May'09 and would like to know if there is a MOCK Test that I can study from ?  I'm really nervous about this. I want to pass it. I hear that the CPC Exam is not an open book test. If anyone can please help me study for this in an easlier way, I would truly appreciate. Thanks. I'm new to all of this.

I passed the exam....woot!

School was very very much worth it.

My advice, do the practice exam several times, and know your terminology.

There were 3 other classmates with me the day we took the test, and all of us passed the first time. We had an excellent instructor, she prepared us for the exam thoroughly.  I could not have passed this exam if i had tried to learn this on my own. I feel very strongly that a medical coding program is the way to go.

Amy, Student March 8, 2009 10:11 PM

To those who have asked about taking medical coding programs.

I have been in a medical coding class since August of 08,

I sit for my exam tomorrow.

The instruction i have had in class has been very thorough.

Medical terminology , A&P, ICD-9, CPT, HCPCS, and medical office.  Even with all of the preparation that i have had, i still feel very nervous about the test. I have had straight A's in class, have made 100's on almost every test. The first time i took the practice exam i still missed 35 out of 150. I have gotten better,

averaging a B on the practice test now.  I believe that it is having such a short amount of time to answer each question that is the killer. How can you be thorough, and code to the best of your ability (especially when you are new at it) in 2 minutes.

I will update after i take my exam, if anyone would like.

Hello - I am trying to get myself certified to become a coder. I currently work at a physician's office and schedule surgeries. I also precert for all surgeries so I do work with CPT code and ICD 9 code book. I am familiar with the book but I don't do billing so I'm not that comformtable. What are the requirements to sit for the CPC exam?? Do I need to take courses in order for me to be eligible or can I study on my own. I am so confused to what I'm suppose to be doing. Please Help.

I sat for the exam November 8 and needless to say, I ran out of time. I was told by our medical coder that majority of the exam is test taking skills. I am trying to find out if our local chapter provide a Mock Test and/or training sessions to coach one to pass the exam. I did all the right things, studied, purchased Exam Review Book/CD, followed all the instructions prior to the exam. I don't think I can read that fast; that morning was one of my best mornings; just not fast enough. Any additional tips would be helpful. I don't know if I can follow the instructions advice in making sure you read the instructions before answering the questions wholeheartly when we were pressed for time.

Well I took the test yesterday and I don't know who I was kidding. Thinking I could pass it. Like I said earlier, two months of studing is not enough. You really need at least 6-8 months. In surgery section, it helps to know how the procedure works in order to pick the right codes. It's not just know how to locate the codes. I thought I was doing good, then all of the sudden I had 30 minutes left and still had 50 questions left. I paniced and just started feeling in the blanks not thoughly reading the questions through. They need to focus on accurance, not 2 minutes for each question. Some you can, some you really have to read the whole procedure, otherwise you will miss something. I will probably take the test again, but after I take some classes. This is something you cannot buy a manual and self teach.  I was discouraged, but seeing how many others that were there that have taken the test for the second, some the third time. I have to just chalk this off as experience, and try again.

I also agree with others that 5 1/2 hours is not enough time to take the examination and pass . The mission is to complete the exam and get as many correct answers as possible not to rush through and pray for a passing grade of 70%. I thinkthe physicians I bill for would want me to be billing the correct cpts and the patients would want to make sure that the diagnoses being billed are also accurate because the diagnoses are very difficult to remove from a patients medical history once they have been billed. I wuld hope in the future if we passa section we should also be credited for the sections we pass and only have to retake the section/s we fail.

Wish me luck, I am going to take the test tomorrow. I have only been studying since October, I don't know what made decide to take the test, I just I wanted a challenge. I have been studying everyday a couple of hours, I know it would of been easier to take a course but I will get a taste of it tomorrow, then when I fail, I will look into taking a test. I have attended several review classes and was given practice questions, if you are interested just let me know and I can email it to you.  Wish me luck.

Hi Carol:

Thanks for keeping us posted as you prepare to take the exam. I will be taking the exam sometime next year and appreciate all the information you provide. I have  read your hectic schedule  but was wondering if you will consider in the future beginning a forum for the newbies. You seem like the ideal person for it. I am sure there of many of us who are considering taking the CPC exam will benefit from it.  I am sure people have lots of questions that we can all benefit from the forum.

Hi Everyone, Boy it sure is nice to see I'm not alone with not passing the CPC exam. If I only had another 1/2 hour. I just found out last Wednesday online that I hadn't passed and I haven't received the results in the mail yet. Will the results be specific? And does anyone know how long it takes to get the paper results? I'm so nervous about taking it again. The 51/2 hours passed quickly, and I also stumbled in the surgical section. There just wasn't enought time to really read and re-read the question. I did pretty well on the CPC Practice exam (I purchaed through Justcoding.com) I did think the actual exam questions where much longer than the practice exam. Does anyone know if the 09 exam will have the same format as the 08 exam? Thanks for listening.

Hello,

I recently passed the CPC Examination after my 2nd attempt.  I would like to offer what I would call helpful advice to those who are taking this difficult test.

1. Do not over study.

2. Do not second guess yourself.

3. Get a good night's rest

4. Lastly, be ever so conscentious of your time.  5 1/2 hours goes fast.

Hi Maria,

I am sorry to hear that you have not passed the exam.  There are no magical formula for passing the exam.  I would recommend taking a break for awhile.

There should be a local chapter of the AAPC in the area you live in.  Contact them and get into one on of their mock review classes.  Also, take a good look at your exam results. It should indicate the areas that you did not do well.  Focus your efforts on these areas and find the resources you need to study.

If you can get with someone who has passed the exam and ask them to help you with the areas that you have the most trouble with.  Your local AAPC chapter should be able to help with this.

I hope this helps.

Hi Alta,

I purchased the CPC Coding Exam Review:The Certification Step by Carol J. Buck.  I am using this study guide because the coordinator for the AAPC region I live in recommended it. She used this book during the mock exam she gave a few weeks ago.  If you go on the AAPC website the info for the study guide is listed. I purchased my book from Borders.

This text is comprehensive and includes all the sections that you will be tested on during the CPC exam.  Also, it comes with a CD that has a pre and post test and a final mock exam that is similar to the CPC exam.

I have gone through the text once and now I am going through it again along with each section of the CPT manual.

I hope this helps!

Hello Carol,%0d%0a%0d%0aI recently took my exam for the third time and failed. I have realized that I ran out of time. When I get to the surgery section I seem to take a long time. I feel that I have to read the entire report to answer each question. I'm not sure if I'm doing the correct thing. I find myself studying many hours a day. How should I study or prepare myself for this headache test. I feel like giving up! Help!
