Confessions of an HIM Student

It's All Happening at Once

Published September 15, 2008 8:09 AM by Travis Bankhead
This week felt like it went by in a flash. Classes and clinical are over for the week and I have the weekend to relax, if relaxing means catching up on reading for class. I definitely need to start doing research for my 20-hour project all of this weekend. I am working on a project with one of my professors and will be comparing ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for domestic violence and the effects they will have on documentation and reimbursement. It just seems like I never have enough time for it all. On a more positive note, my clinical this week was at Iron Mountain and it was very interesting. We had a presentation from our host and then we all were able to take a tour of the warehouse where they are storing records. He explained to us how they are able to keep track of where all of the files are located and have everything bar-coded from the time it enters the facility and if it has to leave again to go back to the hospital.

Also, there is some exciting news about my internship for the spring. Myself and three other classmates are trying to go to the same site for our internships in the spring, and there is a possibility that all four of us may be able to go. We are all in the process of perfecting our resumes and sending them out in order to see if we would be able to go. I know it would be an incredible experience that I would really enjoy and be able to learn a lot from so I am very anxious to hear about our fate in this matter.
