Too Many Features
I'm always amazed by the various cell phone commercials that show off the many handy features other than voice communication. Music downloading, Web surfing, sports updates, text messaging, etc. They are all features that I never use, yet my consumer mind has been brainwashed enough to feel cheated if they are omitted. I basically use my cell phone for calls and taking goofy pictures of my kids. At 30 years old, I am at that point where I can wear the fact that I have never text messaged as a badge of honor rather than a point of out-of-touch shame. I'm not scared of technology; I just need enough to get by.
The point has made me wonder if the "enough-to-get-by" attitude permeates the health care technology field. Companies spend mountains of cash developing unique EHR features that should simplify and support hospitals, but do staff members actually learn every single feature and incorporate them into the work flow? Or do they learn just enough to keep their routine intact?
