90 Days to Go!

Published August 6, 2008 9:18 AM by Frank Irving

As I write this post on Aug. 6, 2008, I'm reminded by the all-news channels that only 90 days remain before the general election on Nov. 4.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the next big events in the campaign will be the Democratic and Republican national conventions, which will be held back-to-back the weeks of Aug. 25 and Sept. 1, respectively.

Some political observers speculate that John McCain may announce his running mate in the next two weeks -- to steal some attention from Barack Obama's camp during the media blitz building up to the Democratic convention in Denver.

However, that scenario has a serious downside. Any buzz generated by a McCain VP announcement would be short-lived, and would position the Republican convention as a non-event or afterthought.

One related item getting plenty of play on the airwaves: The Obama campaign apparently has all but eliminated Hillary Clinton from consideration as a potential Democratic VP candidate.
