Athletes Choose Sides Between Candidates

Published September 9, 2008 7:17 PM by Frank Irving

As reported by L. Jon Wertheim in the Sept. 8 edition of Sports Illustrated, a surprising number of currently active sports figures have publicly endorsed either Barack Obama or John McCain as the presidential campain enters its final stage.

The article cites the following as Obama supporters:

Baron Davis, Los Angeles Clippers

Chauncey Billups, Detroit Pistons

Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury

Derrek Lee, Chicago Cubs

Ben Eager, Chicago Blackhawks

The article cites the following as McCain supporters:

Curt Schilling, Boston Red Sox

Chuck Liddell, Ultimate Fighting

Spencer Hawes, Sacramento Kings

Luis Gonzales, Florida Marlins

Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers (coach)

The article also includes this bit of wry analysis:

But for those who long for more political involvement from their sports idols, they might want to be careful what they wish for. Former slugger Kirk Gibson, now an Arizona Diamondbacks coach, warns, "Just because you're a great athlete doesn't mean you know what you're talking about."
