One never knows where inspiration may appear. People we see
who overcome great odds to succeed in life always provide great inspiration.
People who band together to overcome a hardship or a tragic event always
provide great inspiration. How can you
not be inspired to be a better person as stories emerged of people giving their
lives to protect their loved ones as a gunman opened fire upon a crowded
theater? A sports team winning a game against all odds as they are outmatched
by their opponent always brings people together for a few hours, or even a few
I would find inspiration emerging from various sources while
I was growing up. My high school English teacher was someone who inspired me to
someday chase my dream of being a writer. I was two years into my Nuclear
Medicine career when I met someone who would become my greatest inspiration.
I began working at a pediatric hospital, unaware of how my
life would change forever.
After several months of employment, I met a patient who
would inspire me more than I ever could have imagined. She was a six year old
girl with cancer who did not have long to live. For the purpose of this story,
I will name her “Meghan.” She was brought to our department one morning for a
nuclear medicine study, and upon completion of her test, she was transported
back to her room. The procedure was always the same; a patient would be brought
to the nuclear medicine department, and when the test was finished, they would
be taken back to their room. Most times, that was the extent of our interaction
with the patients. The next day, a nurse from Meghan’s floor called me to ask
me if I would agree to draw Meghan’s blood. For some reason, Meghan refused to
let anyone draw her blood, but she stated that she would allow me to draw her
blood. I wasn’t a phlebotomist, so drawing blood was not something I had ever
After getting to know her, I couldn’t help but be inspired
by her. Here was this beautiful little girl who was battling terminal cancer,
and she had the most positive attitude I had ever seen. She had dreams of being
so many different things when she grew up, but she would never get the chance
to fulfill any of those dreams. After her death, I took a long, hard look at
myself and my life. How dare I let a flat tire ruin my day? How could I let
rush hour traffic destroy my mood? Here was this amazing little girl who had
every right to be bitter and angry about the cards she was dealt, but she never
felt sorry for herself. She always greeted everyone with a smile, in spite of
having every reason not to.
You never know what is going to inspire you. That special
little girl inspired me more than anyone else ever has. Whenever I have a bad
day or begin to feel sorry for myself, all I have to do is think of Meghan and
how brave she was. Suddenly, nothing I face ever seems so bad.
