ADVANCE Angle: LPNs

Rock On, LPN!

If you're an American Idol fan, or even an occasional viewer, you've noticed Amanda Overmyer, dubbed the "rocker nurse."

But did you know that Overmyer is an LPN?

The 23-year-old native of Camden, IN, earned her practical nursing credentials 3 years ago and works as a home health respiratory nurse with Lincare, Kokomo, IN. However, Overmyer's career path may change now that she has wowed Idol judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell with her grounded personality and her bluesy Janis Joplin-like voice.

Overmyer is currently one of the final 16 contestants in the competition.

Kathy Dunbar of Delphi, IN, a friend of the Overmyer family, told the Carroll County (IN) Comet that Amanda should go far in her singing career.

"She has the whole package," Dunbar told the newspaper. "She has terrific talent, stage presence and a deep voice that draws you in. She also has an outstanding, supportive family behind her. Sometimes it's all in the timing, and this is her year."

Dunbar said the judges are calling Amanda the female version of former Idol rocker contestant Chris Daughtry. She added that Overmyer has been the lead singer in three different bands and that she likes to ride her Harley Davidson motorcycle when she's not performing on stage or working.

Overmyer lists Bob Seger and Janis Joplin as musical influences on the American Idol Web site (http://www.americanidol.com/).

As far as her nursing career, Overmyer reports one of her "proudest moments" was when she "received an award at work for my high numbers."

What can RN's do that LPN's cannot do?

I had hopes that Amanda would go all the way. I thought she was great and I am sure that she is a wonderful nurse. I too am an LPN and I take great pride in that. Even though some people may think that is nothing compared to an RN status they are very wrong. I was 35 years old when I decided to go back to school to get my degree and I am very proud of that and I am good at what I do. So rock on Amanda and continue to be a great LPN as well!!!

Well, Amanda gave it a good run, but sadly, she was didn't get the votes last night. It would've been fun to see her in the final 10. I wonder if she'll go back to nursing or decide to continue her music career?

I'm so happy to see that Amanda is an LPN. I was an LPN working in an acute care Float Pool until recently when I completed my schooling and passed the state boards for RN. I'm so glad Amanda announced herself as a Nurse. I called myself a nurse and was shocked at the attitude of the RNs when they found out I was a "lowly" LPN. I did the same job they did, but didn't receive the respect for it because I was an LPN. The truth is, I worked circles around most of the RNs. We're proud of you Amanda!!!!

Congratulations to Amanda for recognition as a "nurse" and not labeled as a LPN. LPN stand for Licensed Practical Nurse-many forget we are nurses, too. Just like the RN--they should be referred to as Registered Nurse, not just nurses. The N in both intitals stand for Nurse. I agree with the fact that LPN's are the Florence Nightingale's of the nursing profession. We can do it all and very well. March on LPN's!!!

I was thrilled to hear that Amanda is an LPN. Some of the smartest and talented people are LPN's. We are nurses too and the medical field has started to realize that. We are the Florence Nightingale of nursing. After 30 years of LPN, didn't want to become anything more than what I am.

That's great that LPNs are represented on such a popular show!
