Don't forget to wear your broccoli?

Published November 6, 2007 11:35 AM by Maureen McAndrews

New research suggests that broccoli, when smeared on the skin, can protect against skin cancer.

In fact, the Washington Post reported that a green smear of broccoli-sprout extract blocked the potentially cancer-causing damage usually inflicted by sunlight and showed potential advantages over sunscreens in tests on people and hairless mice.

Don't get rid of your Coppertone just yet though. The product is still in the early stages of development. Among other issues to be worked out is how best to remove the extract's green pigments, which do not contribute to its protective effects and would turn users green temporarily.

While the implications of these findings are still unclear, the evolving science of research remains completely fascinating.
