Nursing Home Week - Love is Ageless

Mark your calendars - National Nursing Home Week will be celebrated beginning Mother’s Day, May 11, and continuing through May 17, 2008. This year's theme is "Love is Ageless."

National Nursing Home Week, established by AHCA in 1967, is an annual event that recognizes residents and caregivers. AHCA has produced a National Nursing Home Week kit consisting of an event planning guide, promotional products for this observance and suggested activities.

Here are some ways nursing homes celebrated National Nursing Home Week last year:

Imboden Creek Living Center, Decatur, Ill., scheduled a variety of events and performances, including Mother's Day Tea, an Elvis impersonator,  a Harley-Davidson motorcycle display,  a visit from miniature horses and a Hawaiian dancer. Families are invited to all events.

Kensington Manor, Elizabethtown, Ky., gave employees up to $20 in gasoline. The nursing home spent more than $1,500 to recognize about 75 employees.

Life Care Center, Sierra Vista, Ariz., held an open house with refreshments, music provided by the local radio station and other special events, including a Senior Prom, where residents dressed up in fifties-style clothes to eat and dance. Other activities included a twin day, treasure hunt, pajama party and barbecue.

Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, Maysville, Ky., held a “dancing with the Stars” competition, a riverboat cruise and an Elvis impersonator.

AHCA offers some great suggestions on its Web site, www.nnhw.org, inlcuding making Valentine's Day in May and watching classic romantic movies.

I think it is important to recognize your staff as well as residents.

Does anyone out there have any other ideas they'd like to share?

please help with some different and clever activities for national nursing home week. this is my first time as doing this on my own so i need all the ideas i can get
