Is Swine Flu a Real Threat?

Published April 30, 2009 12:41 PM by Adkins-Ali Carrie

Swine flu is primarily affecting people between the ages of 18 and 50 and is markedly absent from the senior population. Do you consider it a threat to your residents? Are you taking any additional precautions to protect your population? Finally, do you think it is a real threat or a lot of hype?

Swine flu should be taken seriously with the symptoms being quite similar to those of the seasonal flu, including fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, and coughing.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some who have been infected with the swine flu also reported having a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. While there is no vaccine to prevent infection of the swine flu, the CDC is recommending to people of ALL AGES to avoid close contact with people that are sick as much as possible, frequently wash your hands and disinfect shared household objects such as faucets and doorknobs. For more information about swine flu, you should visit the CDC’s Web site at www.cdc.gov/swineflu.
