Medicare Drug Program Three Years Later
The Medicare Part D program implemented three years ago has largely met its primary goal of making critical medications more affordable for seniors, according to a report from the
New England Journal of Medicine.
The Kaiser Family Foundation analyzed government data and past studies and found that for the most part, people who used to lack drug coverage saw out-of-pocket costs drop after enrolling in the Medicare drug program.
Government spending on the program has also been lower than expected. The program cost $40 billion in 2007, less than the projected $66 billion, the report said.
But the program still has its challenges, according to an article in The Washington Post. Read more about them here.
