What's Your Game Plan for Respiratory Care Week?

Published October 21, 2008 1:10 PM by Colleen Mullarkey
It's an exciting time for sports fans in Philadelphia with its team garnering a coveted spot in the World Series for the first time since 1993. But last month the Phillies had another big win - for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

A host of Phillies players joined their mascot the Philly Phanatic and Flyers right wing Mike Knuble for a fundraiser benefiting CF research. The Foundation's Delaware Valley Chapter sponsored the fifth-annual Charlie's Fight Night, named for 11-year-old Charlie Clarke who was diagnosed with CF in November 2003. This year more than 500 people turned out at Citizen Bank Park's VIP Diamond Club, raising $230,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through donations and silent auction bids.

With Respiratory Care Week in our midst, now is a great time to get together with your staff and think about fun events you can plan to raise awareness or funding for respiratory illness. Respiratory departments nationwide are promoting respiratory health through a variety of events-- from motorbike rallies to asthma bowling tournaments, free lung health screenings, ambitious walks, and more!

Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego has had some unlikely events for its Respiratory Care Week celebrations in the past few years. Natural disasters in the California area sidelined the hospital's planned events, but they didn't stop the respiratory team from promoting the profession through their hard work and dedication and most importantly, helping people in need. To read more about their story, check out this guest editorial from ADVANCE's Mike Gibbons.
