Applications Now Open For EPA Asthma Awards

Published February 3, 2010 1:03 PM by Vern Enge
Here's something new for your consideration as an asthma education specialist.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is currently accepting applications for its National Environment Leadership Award in Asthma Management.

Look at your program to see whether it addresses environmental triggers as part of a comprehensive asthma program, fosters high-performing collaborations and partnerships, improves the daily lives of those with asthma and their families, or saves health care dollars.

This competition is divided into three separate categories: health care plans, health care providers, or community in action. The national awards will highlight programs which have demonstrated leadership in managing environmental asthma triggers as part of a comprehensive asthma management program.

This national award competition is designed to recognize organizations responsible for coordinating and overseeing the delivery of asthma services on a state, local, or regional level.

"Receiving this award will assist us in demonstrating to our patients, the people we touch every day, that they are receiving quality asthma education from a nationally recognized program," explained June Niblett of the Seton Asthma Center, a 2009 award winner.

These prestigious awards will be given at the National Asthma Forum on June 17. Winners will receive a crystal award, national recognition on EPA's Web site, customized press kits and support-generating media attention, and increased visibility on the national level.

Deadline to apply for the recognition award is March 16.

To apply on line, click on http://www.asthmaawards.info or for a mailed application form contact Tracey Mitchell at Mitchell.tracey@epa.gov or Kim Durkin at durkin.kim@epa.gov. The Web site does contain a sample application and hints for telling your group's asthma story.
