Familiar Surroundings
I just arrived in Providence, RI, for the 2008 American Medical Technologists Annual Meeting. While usually a travel day to a conference is the perfect time to explore the area and find out where I am, I'm pretty familiar with Providence, as I grew up just 20 minutes away. If I was less directionally challenged, I would have been able to pick out my parent's boat in a marina about 10 minutes from here while I flew overhead.
While Boston was only about 45 minutes from my hometown, the perils of the "big dig" and one of the most confusing city layouts known to man meant I didn't make it in there quite as often. So when I went there last month for the American Society of Microbiology General Meeting, I extended my stay and did some of the tourist things. I had lunch at Cheers, watched street performers at Faneuil Hall and toured Fenway Park, even catching my beloved Red Sox in action thanks to one of my cousin's ticket connections.
Whether you're traveling from across the country or down the street, it can be fun to get out and see the sites when you're attending conferences. What are some of your favorite meeting destinations? What was the best tour, restaurant or attraction you've experienced through conference travel? Let us know by posting below, and check back throughout the week for more posts as AMT gets underway.
