Med Tech Program Turns 25
The Medical Technology Program in the College of Health Professions at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), Savannah, GA, marks its 25th anniversary this year. As one of two such programs among the University System of Georgia's 35 institutions, AASU's program has shown strong growth since 2000.
The number of full-time faculty members has grown to five, the number of graduates emerging from the program has climbed to 38 from four; the current number of students majoring in medical technology is up to 84 from 12; and the number of clinical sites where students can conduct their required practicum has increased to 25 in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. The program offers in-state tuition agreements with students residing in South Carolina.
Students who hold a two-year degree and who are working in the medical technology field can opt to pursue a bachelor's degree in medical technology, which can be completed in 15 months. "It's a great way for medical laboratory technicians already in the field to get their four-year degree, which could help impact their salary very significantly," said Hassan Aziz, PhD, CLS(NCA), department head.
