(Flu) Shots for All!

Published August 19, 2009 12:22 PM by Amanda Koehler

This morning I read a story in the New York Times about how New York is mandating flu shots for all healthcare workers, mostly out of fear of H1N1 outbreaks.

A healthcare union in the state is protesting, saying: "Healthcare workers on the front lines of providing care deserve the dignity and respect of thoughtful consideration before a regulation like this can just be rushed through and put into effect." -- George Gresham, president, 1199 S.E.I.U. United Healthcare Workers East.

What do you think, especially you New York laboratorians?

At 24 I am still young and healthy but have never had a flu shot, nor want one, and while I don't work in New York State our hospital/clinic handles a large quantity of New York patients since we are right on the border.  It has always been strongly advocated for employees to receive a flu shot but never forced upon us.  I have no desire to start getting shots now and shouldn't be forced to because of my profession.  I can only hope New York does not enforce this policy or I could always start looking more seriously at moving south.
