A Random Act of Kindness

Published June 4, 2010 9:31 AM by Amanda Koehler

During my ninth grade journalism class, my teacher had us read a poem about random acts of kindness. She told us to perform a random act of kindness that month, which I thought was a neat assignment.

Kindness, whether random or otherwise, is one of those elements that makes the world go 'round. Kindness is especially important in the workplace. Who wants to work with someone who isn't kind?

You spend so much time with your coworkers that they can become close friends, or even almost like a family. Your coworkers can be there for you through professional and personal struggles alike. Think back to that time when you really needed that hug, card or good cop of coffee that coworker brought you. How much did you appreciate that?

I once told a coworker about how much I like Moravian sugar cake -- something they serve at our church on Christmas Eve. (If you ever get a chance, try some -- it's delish!) I had been told by family members and others that it was a pretty hard cake to make, and I told my coworker this, too.

A few weeks later, my coworker came in and handed me my own Moravian sugar cake she made just for me -- for no real reason than to put a smile on my face while I was going through a tough time. I never forgot her random act of kindness, and I never will.

On our Facebook fan page, we asked our readers what was the nicest thing a coworker ever did for them. Jamie Kinsey Bergwick said her coworker commended her on a job well done in front of all her other coworkers -- something that made her feel "important and respected." Jerry Jeffer had a coworker cover for him last minute so he could take a final exam. Carey Stanton has a coworker who occasionally brings the whole team Frostys (yum!), and Vincent Williams had a coworker buy him sushi and drinks after a hard week.

Chris Boris got a balloon bouquet from a coworker when she was having a rough day, and a coworker took a pregnant Kimberly Prokop Grady to the hospital after she shocked herself with a lamp in the darkroom while reading FTA slides.

Sounds like some pretty great coworkers to me! Let's continue the conversation here. What's something kind a coworker has done for you?
