ASCLS to Host Food Drive at Annual Meeting

Published June 7, 2010 11:21 PM by Matthew T. Patton
The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) is hosting a first-ever food drive during the ASCLS Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA (July 27-21).

ASCLS Provides HOPE - Helping Other People Event, will benefit the Orange County Food Bank. The greatest need is for donation of protein items, such as peanut butter (in plastic jars) and canned meat or tuna, but any non-perishable canned food, dry cereal or dry food item is appreciated according to ASCLS. Other examples include canned soup, chili, stews, canned fruit and vegetables, pasta or rice.

ASCLS said, "Keep in mind that most families will not have the 'extra ingredients' to go along with preparing a cake, or other more complex dish."

The ASCLS Promotion of the Profession Committee (PPC) will have a donation barrel available at the Hyatt Regency Orange County during the Anaheim meeting.

Donation times are listed below, and coincide with events at the hotel.

Donation Times
  • Tuesday: July 27 (12-1 p.m.; 4:30-5:30 p.m.)
  • Wednesday: July 28 (7:30-8:30 a.m.; 7:30-10:30 p.m.)
  • Thursday, July 29 (4:30-5:15 p.m.)
  • Friday, July 30 (8:00 am-12:30 p.m.)
For those not able to pack food to bring to the meeting, a Super Target is located within two blocks of the hotel so that donations can be made onsite. Monetary donations will also be accepted. For those unable to attend the meeting, a Virtual Food Drive will be available online at http://www.ocfoodbank.org/fooddrive/virtual.html beginning June 1.

As a way to promote the profession, and provide a face to the community of Anaheim, make plans to help ASCLS provide HOPE to those less fortunate.

Way to go Keith, you are the man! Our profession is HOPELESS! Let the 1000 and one association keep on collecting everybody's money and continue to have the "make believe" that "really" they are there for you! HA! The elephant is getting so big to the skies, it wouldn't even notice if a fly is kissing its hiney! I know bad analogy.... LOL! Waiting for some "sagacious" reactions here.....

I have been in this profession for a TON of years and all I hear is  how badly laboratory professionals want to INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF WHO WE ARE!! If this dum dum uneducated country doesn't know by now who is looking at their pee and blood then really --WHO CARES!! I just want to get paid a fair salary for all the intense training I had to go through!!! and the general public isn't going to help me with that. If Laboratory Professionals had a UNION then maybe..we would be recognized finally.%0d%0a%0d%0a

This is an excellent opportunity for all laboratory professionals, not only ASCLS members, to provide the face of the profession, to increase public awareness of who we are and what we do and to provide a very worthwhile public service.

I hope all attendees will participate.
