Cancer Stem Cells Discoveries Explored

Published June 28, 2010 12:11 AM by Matthew T. Patton

ADVANCE Newsmagazines is proud to sponsor "Cancer Stem Cells: Implications for Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment," a scientific session at the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science 78th annual meeting held July 27-31 in Anaheim, CA. On Thursday, July 29 at 12:45 p.m., join ADVANCE and presenter J. Lynne Williams, PhD, MLS, Oakland University, Rochester, MI, for an interesting look into this developing area of science.

Not all cancer cells have the same capacity for proliferation and self-renewal. There has been increased interest in identifying "cancer stem cells" (CSC) and their unique biologic properties, anticipating the discovering of more effective treatments leading to more durable remissions. The latest discoveries will be summarized with implications for cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.

Attendees will be able to:

  • differentiate between "cancer initiating cells" and "CSC;"
  • discuss the impact on patient prognosis and outcome of CSC; and
  • explain the therapeutic implications and presence of CSC.
