Patient Privacy Violations Follow Arizona Shootings

Published January 14, 2011 11:29 PM by Matthew T. Patton
According to a statement issued by the University Medical Center (UMC), Tucson, AZ, the hospital has terminated three clinical support staff members this week for inappropriately accessing confidential electronic medical records of victims in Saturday's shooting. UMC maintains a zero tolerance policy on patient privacy violations. A contracted nurse also was terminated by the nurse's employer.

The facility is not aware of any confidential patient information being released publicly. The families of all patients whose information was accessed have been notified.
