Facebook Feedback: Lab Smells
If you're not following us on Facebook,
you're missing a lot of fun feedback. If you are, keep following and spread the
word! The conversations are far from over.
We asked Facebook fans: What is your least favorite smell in the lab?
Here are selected responses,
copied verbatim without editing:
-
Stool
cultures in the incubator.
- Hmmm
...the cups that come in with semen analysis...nothing can prepare you for
opening that container
- Either
something hardcore growing in the incubator or old or particularly
infected urine.
- Having
worked in Bacteriology for nearly a decade, I have to say that the smell I
really want to avoid is the smell of serum. I'm used to the usual stinky
bugs and exudate. Serum just smells nasty.
- Proteus.
- urines
from the nursing home!
- What?...I
think Proteus smells good. Haha. Yup, the post vasectomy semen analysis is
the worst!!!
- Turbid urine
is slightly more likely to reek than merely "cloudy" urine, in
my opinion. Proteus, E. coli, and Clostridium would also rank up there if
I was lucky enough to interpret bacterial cultures on day shift (one very
important motivation for me to kick 7P-7A with my current employer in the
NEAR future). :D
- Beta-mercaptans.
YUCK!!!
- From dogs and
cats alike: the smell of bacteria in urine when they have an UTI. As soon
as I took the top off and vapors reached my nose, I had to step back and
re-cap it.
- Stinky pee
:/
- nasty
urines...followed closely by old Proteus plates in the micro biohazard bags.
- I hate the
Ameri-clear... bleh.
- Nasty
urine, wet prep positive for Gardnerella
- ANY semen.
Post Vas or fertility! **hack** cough***
- 5day old
rotting legs left in an open box in the walk-in reagent fridge!!
- A certain
strain of Pseudomonas that smells like feet, dirt, mold and vomit all
mixed together.
- The smell
of VB12 releasing agent for the Centaur...smells like perm solution gone
bad!
- Phlegm!!
or Lung aspirates.....ewwww, give me poo any day!
- FORMALIN I
HATE IT!!
- Really
stinky colectomies - especially with a gassy volvulus that has had time to
stew. *retch*

- Anaerobes!
- Iron and
retic reagents....and semen!
- Semen for
sure Yuck! And nasty urines
We

or not Staph aureus or Klebsiella! Go figure!
