Facebook Feedback: Flu Shots and Career Motivations

Published November 2, 2011 11:54 AM by Kelly Wolfgang

If you're not following us on Facebook, you're missing a lot of fun feedback. If you are, keep following and spread the word! The conversations are far from over.

We asked Facebook fans: Fill in the blank: I am a laboratory professional because _________.

Here are selected responses, copied verbatim without editing:

  • even though I was a combat infanty medic, EMT, and med tech....I was not "qualified" for med school even though my medical background was superior to that of 90% of the med school applicants....oh wait, I wasn't related to any med school alum...my bad
  • I didn't want direct patient care. Funny I'm a MLT who does mainly phlebotomy...who would've guessed!
  • I want to help patients without actually seeing or doing anything with the actual patients. Also, I love routine and order and details :)
  • I don't like patient contact...
  • I love Phlebotomy
  • it's an amazing career!
  • My mind is drawn to science, and I'm just slightly anti-people. :)
  • I'm a glutton for punishment. :P (J/K!) I've always loved science, and I enjoy never seeing the same thing every day (or night) at work.
  • There aren't too many other professions where you merge real biological science with medicine. I also get to play with expensive toys all day!
  • the lab is full of bookish, quirky, science geeks like me!
  • I really thought it was an exciting, important and amazing career...
I still do; too bad no one else does!!!
  • I love to solve a tough puzzle :) and of course to make people feel better faster
  • I wanted to work in Microbiology

We also asked Facebook fans: Will you get a flu shot this year?

  • Already did!
  • Nope! I haven't gotten a flu shot since 1999. I had a horrible reaction to it then. Besides, every year is a best guess of what flu will hit.
  • I have already done so as well. My possibly soon-to-be former employer requires all employees to either get one by November 14 or wear a mask throughout their working hours between November 15 and March 1.Facebook Feedback
  • Got it for free at work
  • got mine, got my son's and getting my daughter's in a couple weeks..
  • Since getting one is a condition of employment...getting it this week. I dont want to wear a mask until March.
  • Already got it.
  • Got mine for free at work. It isn't mandatory but highly recommended!
  • Yes and it hurt! lol
  • Not yet its mandatory at my place of employment
  • Got mine already. There is a great blog going around about healthcare workers not wanting one. It's called "A Budget of Dumb Asses 2011 Rubor, Calor, Tumor."
Check it out. Super funny and true.
  • I already got mine for free from work. Currently, my place of employment does not require it, but we do have to fill out paperwork to opt out of the shot, and starting next year it will be required.
  • Absolutely!!
  • This morning
  • I don't see how employers can make the shot mandatory. There are a lot of people who just can't get the shot -like me. Besides that, patients arrive in the hospital coughing up a lot worse thing than the flu. If wearing a mask during flu season is required, why not require one year round? What makes the flu worse than another respiratory disease? I wear a mask whenever a patient presents with respiratory symptoms.
  • My hospital made the shot mandatory , or you have to wear a mask if you refuse.
  • Mandatory!
  • Mandatory, got mine today!!
  • Already done!
  • Got mine a few weeks ago.
  • Done! A little *** in the arm beats muscle aches, fever, and respiratory symptoms for a number of days.
  • I got mine today.
  • Mandatory as well.
  • Yes! Already did!
  • Already did! Have to sign a declination and wear a mask if not!
  • Absolutely, it's the right thing to do for our patients, families, and co-workers. It may not be perfect, but it's the best thing we've got at the moment.
  • Maybe the patients should be wearing masks. TB exposure from one = positive TB test and had to do 6 months of antibiotics!
  • Yes, because I needed it and because it's required at my hospital.
  • I tried, but they told me no. I guess it's not for people with suppressed immune systems this year...
  • Nope
