Spread the Word: A Medical Technology Student’s Perspective

Thoughts on Being a Student

Published June 17, 2009 11:19 AM by Tiffany Landis

As medical technology students, we are being prepared for the workforce. We are being taught to perform laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner. We are being taught to think about the theory behind the test, not that we are just running the test to see a positive or negative. We are learning about the new technologies and the modern ways of running tests manually.

Once we are out in a laboratory, we have to be able to think fast and logically and be able to work in stressful situations. The program I am inat UTHSC is preparing my classmates and I really well for the "real world." I am earning information I know I'll have with me for a long time. The medical technology field will never be boring as long as you're willing to keep learning!

I became certified as a medical laboratory professional through the Medical Technology program of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC.  The current tuition of that program is $3000 per year (not including textbooks and housing/food/transportation costs).

I earned the Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship, which paid the full program tuition ($2000 for the 2003-04 academic year).

The WFUBMC program is an intensive one-year program designed for either students who have completed three years of prerequisite courses ("3+1" students) and will receive a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology upon completing the program - OR students such as myself who already hold a bachelor's degree in biology or chemistry and will merely be eligible to take the ASCP Board of Registry exam upon program completion ("4+1" students).

See http://www1.wfubmc.edu/pathology/medtech/ for more information on the WFUBMC program.

I understand you are at UTHSC in Memphis, TN. If you don't mind I just want to compare. How much is your tuition per semester/yearly for the Medical Technology program. If you are on scholarships how much would it be without scholarships. We have UTHSC here in San Antonio Texas and I have looked at the price of attendance but I'm wondering how it compares to Memphis. I'm just curious. Are you a full time student?
