A Support System: Joining a National Organization

Published August 11, 2009 5:58 PM by Tiffany Landis

The ASCLS National Meeting was an amazing experience. I met a lot of wonderful professionals and made some really great friends. I was amazed will all the excitement about the profession and how welcomed I felt. Students are the future of this organization and we need to keep this organization growing. As I discovered a lot of students are not aware of the importance of the organization and all the opportunities it provides. Being a part of a national organization allows you to become part of a network, a means of making lifelong friends, a support system, a voice for the profession, leadership skills and so much more.

Stephanie, you bring up one of the most no-brainer things I have experienced in my career as an MLS. I also graduated from a program where the name of ASCLS was never mentioned, and I lost on scholarship possibilities, not to mention starting earlier with my networking with these wonderful colleagues whom I now have as ASCLS friends.  If you can think of a way to help us get the word to all students in ALL programs in this country, of the benefits of belonging to ASCLS, I'd be all ears as the new President of ASCLS!

The program from which I graduated (WFU Baptist Medical Center's in Winston Salem, NC) was geared toward preparation for the ASCP registry and did not mention a word about the benefits of joining a professional society in our new career field.  As you may imagine, we did not get to attend any national meetings, either. :(

Have you finished your awesome microbiology rotation yet?
