Spread the Word: A Medical Technology Student’s Perspective

Passion

Published September 21, 2009 1:13 PM by Tiffany Landis

It took me a while to figure out just what I am passionate about. I was sitting in on the presentations at the GMABB meeting in Memphis, and I realized my passion. My passion is becoming a medical laboratory scientist,  so that I can help people.

I have a blog I started with ADVANCE to let people know about the profession and how to become a medical laboratory scientist. I am a member of ASCLS and I am the Tennessee Co-Student Delegate. I love the profession!

I do not know quite yet which area I fit into, although I am leaning towards microbiology and blood bank. I like being hands-on and not having to worry about troubleshooting instruments. I like figuring out the puzzle pieces.

My passion was literally right under my nose but for some reason it took something that was said in that meeting to make me realize that. I would love to have the privilege one day to say I helped save a life. I know I chose the right profession.

I admire you Tiffany for your passion and dedication to the lab profession!

As much as I love the medical laboratory science and interaction with patients, I didn't last in the field after working for about 10 years in the large clinic lab. My decision was made based on the salary and benefits and my financial responsibilities to my family. In just 2 years since I moved to medical device manufacturing and research I am making double of what I use to make working in the lab. I also advanced much faster in my current industry and very much enjoy it.

To conlude, I wish employers would pay MLTs and MTs better salaries and offer better recognition. The compensation topic is in the air since I graduated program back in 90s, but unfortunately not much changed in that area.

Good luck to you Tiffany in your job!

Our profession needs people like you.  Keep sharing your enthusiasm.  Once you become a laboratorian, remember to spread it beyond the walls of the lab.  Here's what I tell new hospital employees:

You can be the face of your department throughout the institution.  Watch for interdepartmental opportunities throughout your institution in which you can get involved- even non-clinical ones like Hospital Week Committee and Physician Satisfaction Committee.   Say hi to everyone.  Don't wait to be asked- ask if you can join in or help.

Best wishes...
