Update From NP in Haiti

Published March 18, 2010 9:12 AM by Jill Rollet
Yesterday I wrote about Luc Bouquet, a Florida NP who has been providing disaster relief in Haiti since the earthquake. Here's a note from Luc himself by way of Florida NP Jean Aertker.
I am Luc L. Bouquet a native of Haiti. I understand how important it is to get an education and never forget those who are less fortunate. On January 15, three days after the earthquake that caved in most of the capital city that is Port-Au-Prince, I flew to the Dominican Republic and drove eight (8) hours to reach P-AU-Pce with a friend. He left two days after and I stayed.

For two months I have worked 10 hours a day 7 days a week. I was at St Francois De Sales hospital along with Haitians doctors and Germans performing hundreds of external fixation and care for thousands of wounds. I have seen the worst injuries you can think. But hundreds recovered without serious handicap.

I must add that I left a job of $50 an hour to go back to Haiti, and I plan to stay for good and provide medical care to the much needy in Haiti. My goals are to build a clinic into a hospital and establish a nursing school.

Statistics reveal there are 0.3 nurses for 10,000 Haitians. I always believe the future of Haiti lies in building a new generation of Haitians  by caring for the children. There are thousands of them in the streets of P-Au-Pce. I would like to take in 50 of them to provide them with an education and medical care. I figured out that $40 a month per kid will do that and provide them with two meals a day and a place to live.

I am starting also a mobile clinic to provide for those outside P-Au-Pce. I do not have any supplies to run a clinic, just my stethoscope. I welcome FNP, ANP, Midwife, Pediatrician NPs who would like to come. But I also estimate it will cost $3,000 a month to run a clinic with one Haitian doctor, two nurses and buy meds in Haiti.

Any contribution can be made to Melbourne Church of Christ and earmark Haitian Fund, and it is tax deductible.
