Great Online DNP Programs

Published December 3, 2010 1:55 PM by Lisa Chism, NP
Here at the DNP Answers blog we take your questions about the DNP and answer them as best we can. This post is written by blogger Lisa Chism, NP.

Q: What are some of the programs that really have great online coursework?

A:  Many programs offer all online coursework or “hybrid programs,” which offer online and “in-person” coursework. Most programs online have some requirement to be on campus, often for one week a semester. You can find specific details regarding each program available by going to http://www.aacn.nche.edu/dnp/dnpprogramlist.htm and clicking on each program you are interested in. This will take you directly to the website of that school and DNP program. From there you can investigate what programs are online and which will best meet your personal needs.

Ms Jaclyn Engelsher mentioned UTHCS...which one, Texas or Tennessee?

The UTHSC DNP is a 2-year hybrid program that is delivered via Blackboard with 1 week of on-campus time in August, December, and May.  I am an FNP and their DNP allowed me to double board as an PMHNP, however they offer a variety of other options. A CNS classmate took the DNP classes plus the missing "3P"s so she can now sit for the PMHNP exam. They tailor to your needs. It is the 2nd oldest DNP program in the country which is a big factor in why I chose it (I also looked at a program in AZ that was similar). There are a lot of cut-and-paste DNP programs popping up that do little more than add a credential to your name. If you are going to sped the time and money, it should enhance your clinical practice. If the faculty only work in education or the school does not actively encourage them to use their APRN/CNS in the clinical setting, keep looking!

I am looking for an on-line DNP Program that specializes in clinical practice and not  health care administration or nursing education. Thank you!
