DNPs and Scope of Practice
Here at the DNP Answers blog we take your questions about the doctor of nursing practice degree and answer them as best we can. This post is written by blogger Michael Zychowicz, NP.
Q: I'm wondering if the AACN willpermit ARNPs, after 2015, to practice within the same scope of practice andwith the same privileges as they have currently or will they insist that theywork with fewer privileges? For example, work without their prescriptiveauthority, or under the direct supervision of an MD? (Margaret Rosales, RN-ARNPstudent)
A: I have never heard any of theprofessional APRN organizations propose or discuss this. I am confidentthat if/when the DNP requirement becomes a reality, those that have a MSN/NPwill be grandfathered and will continue to have the same recommendations forscope of practice, prescriptive authority, etc. I do not believe thiswill be any different that the transition we went through as a profession fromcertificate-prepared NPs to MSN-prepared NPs.
