Independent Practice for NPs Has Support of RWJF and AARP

Published February 3, 2011 10:21 AM by Michelle Pronsati

Remember last year's release of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on the future of nursing? Well, the movement for more NP autonomy across the nation is really gaining steam as a result. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is now selecting states to unleash "regional action coalitions," known as RACs, to work on achieving universal independent practice for NPs, a goal stated in the IOM report. See this link for information and an application.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has a heavy hitter funding the technical assistance it will provide to RACs: AARP. It's laudable that AARP has decided to put its might behind nursing and the advancement of NPs in particular. In case you missed it back in October, here's an AARP article praising NPs.

Independent practice for NP's is long over due, we care for the entire human, not just their disease. We are professionals in our own right unlike PA's who were created by MDs to ease their work and replace NP's. Nursing has been an independent profession even before Nightingale documented how infection control saves lives. We have served the commmunity and fostered health promotion, disease prevention and wellness all along.
