Healthy, Youthful Skin on the Skinny

Published March 13, 2012 7:56 AM by Cindy Cobb
What do our patients want?
  1. To look better, look more youthful
  2. Look better without down time
  3. Look better right away
  4. Look better without pain
  5. Look better without surgery
  6. Look better without costing too much

So how do we help them accomplish all of this? First, we have to understand what comprises a youthful appearance. Young, youthful skin is glowing and bright. A young, youthful face is a full face.

Now that we know what we're after, how do we obtain or retain a youthful appearance as we age without breaking the bank? The single easiest way to accomplish this is by using sun protection on exposed skin every day, no matter if the sun is shining or not. The protection should include a physical block that will protect against UVA rays, the deeper, more damaging rays.

Another fairly inexpensive way to assist with a more youthful appearance is drinking plenty of water - at least 64 ounces per day. Reducing stress and getting enough sleep (at least 8 hours) are inexpensive behaviors that can contribute to a more youthful appearance as well. And of course, following a regular skin care regimen that includes use of retinoids/retinols is a big help in keeping that young fresh skin.

What do you do if you already have some damage and are trying to turn back the hands of time? I recommend you begin by following the simple, inexpensive tips listed above and consider adding a vitamin C topical serum to assist with rebuilding collagen. Add microdermabrasion and/or chemical peels, since both of these tend to be less expensive than lasers, and you're on your way.

Happy voyage for younger, more youthful looking skin ... that doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.
