SOS: Save Our Soda!

Published April 8, 2010 11:18 AM by Joe Darrah
I'm not certain that the protesters who recently flocked to City Hall in Philadelphia to rally against a proposed tax on soda by Mayor Michael Nutter should be too concerned.

Fearful that scores of people who work in the beverage-company industry will lose their jobs if sales drop as a result of a tax (which would also reportedly affect other sugared drinks like iced tea and chocolate milk), these individuals are giving too much credit to people by assuming most of us will abandon our palate preferences.

Rightly so, many healthcare providers are taking the opportunity to encourage people to improve their diets by drinking lower-calorie products and save money all at once, but they may be wasting their breath. I think people will be much more likely to hit up stores in locales where taxes aren't incurred as opposed to maintaining healthier habits.

But I hope people will prove me wrong.
