ADVANCE Perspective: Nurses

Recognizing Day Sleepers

Published May 10, 2011 7:54 AM by Linda Jones
In the midst of National Nurses Week is another observance many nurses can relate to: National Night Shift Day. Having been married to a person who has worked shiftwork, and sometimes steady nights, for the majority of our marriage, I can relate to the culture of those who sleep during the day.

Living your life on the opposite timeframe as the rest of society can be challenging. Throw in a spouse, children and all of life's other complications, which are hard enough on the "rest of us," and you can end up sleep deprived, moody and at increased risk for health issues. These issues have been identified as shift work sleep disorder.

The biopharmaceutical company Cephalon has created a video to recognize the 15 million people - many of them nurses -- who are working while the rest of us are sleeping.

Enjoy the video then let us know what you do to combat the consequences of shift work by leaving a comment below.
