Thankful for Health
What is it exactly that we define as being "healthy?" I know in my freshman theory class we had various definitions all of which were vague and inconclusive--that however makes sense now after having some experience on the floor. One's health, is exactly that--defined by that person and by that person only. He or she may have a tome of medications and may not be able to get out of bed every day but may consider his or herself to be healthy. I am encouraged by these such patients and am led to reflect on how thankful I am for my health and the health of my family.
My last living grandparent, my grandfather, is what I would consider healthy. He is self sufficient, ambulates without assistance, doesn't have any major chronic health conditions other than high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He is however getting his second knee replaced next month--I expect him to do well as he just went under general anesthesia for a sinus surgery recently. I tell him he is "super man" because I am constantly impressed with his energy and zealousness for life. As I have gotten older and have gotten more into nursing, I am impressed by his ability to keep up with his children and grandchildren or at least attempt to when he can't quite make it.
For myself, although I have JRA, I am so thankful that I am able to manage my pain and do what I love to do. I am active every day and continue to strive to achieve new athletic goals despite what some people would consider barriers.
This Thanksgiving holiday, I am so thankful that my friends and family are healthy and I am thankful to be part of a profession that can aid those who may not be as fortunate.
