Nursing: You Wanna Know What I Think?

One Girl's Love Story is Another Girl's Porn

Published July 30, 2012 5:37 PM by Pat Veitenthal
I gotta tell you. I have laughed myself silly over all my nurse friends reading THAT BOOK. Come on, you know which one: 50 Shades of Grey.

Full disclosure, I read book one myself to see what all the fuss was about. Yawn. It's porn. "OH NO," my friends all yell! "It is NOT porn! It's erotica." That is what cracks me up. Erotica is just what well educated people call porn.

Anyway, I have engaged in good natured debates about the book with several friends and I can't find many who will agree with me, I admit.

Of course, all those friends have read the full trilogy and I admittedly have not. "It's a wonderful love story..." Romeo and Juliet is a love story. Sleepless in Seattle is a love story. Fifty is porn.

OK, OK...not even the real point of this blog.

What I think is, all these nurses don't want to admit they're reading porn because that's just wrong, right? Wrong!! If you are an adult, and you want to read porn, then read it. No need to be ashamed. Porn's purpose, by loose definition, is to sexually stimulate. Fifty certainly does that, agreed? And there is nothing wrong with an adult being sexually stimulated as long as the outlet is healthy. Oh hell, let's not even GO there...

In that case, it's still porn to me. I found the story line in the first book weak and boring at best, and I certainly cared little or nothing about the characters. Thanks, though, for the clarification from an "official" person... your input is appreciated!

There is a difference between erotica and porn.  With porn, there's no real story line, but with erotica, there is one, and there are characters you can care about.  That being said, I have no plans to read that book.

I just finished Bed Number Ten by Sue Baier and it was an amazing book!!  This should absolutely be read by every nurse!  It is a true story, which gives the book a whole different level of value.  The author provides amazing insight into the world of being a patient.  Fantastic book!!
