I hope that everyone had a happy and safe 4th of July. With the holiday over my stress level has increased. I picked up some extra hours for the month of July to cover a co-workers vacation and in two weeks I start back to school. With these new hours I am working in a new practice area. I am working in a long term care hospital, it is state funded so no insurance issues and the patient population mainly comes to live rather than rehab and go home. I am struggling with this new population. Being the new person I am getting a lot of patient refusals where the "regular" therapist had no problems. I am working on building my rapport with these patients to engage them in the most appropriate treatment. I heard a few times in my first shift "Thats not how the other therapist does it." I try to explain to the patients that I am just covering and every therapist has their own style. In this environment it is espeically difficult because the staff has been there for years and so have most of the patients. So, how do you deal with difficult patients when you cover a vacation?
