COTA Thoughts

Continuing Education in the Old Days

Published August 23, 2013 5:47 PM by Tim Banish

So are you one of the ones that hates having to attend yet another long and boring continuing education class? Over my years as a COTA I attended many classes to get Continuing Education Credits (CEUs). Yes some are boring, and repetitious, but it's all in what you want to make it.

Before the days of internet education, we actually had to go to a location for CEU classes. That sometimes entailed an overnight trip and hotel, adding to the cost of the class. Living in a rural area made this even harder, as the closest place to take a CEU class was at least 2 hours away.

After so many years as a COTA finding any CEUs without repeating classes I had already attended became tough. However I found some presenters could engage the audience better, making the class enjoyable. In a few positions I had CEUs offered during work hours, either during meetings with new information presented or when an educator presented.

Even though you may attend some CEUs with subject matters that you may never use in the clinic, seeing new equipment or hearing how someone else does things opens your mind to think about how to alter that into your own practice. Like one of my teachers told us, just because you're done with school doesn't mean you're done learning.

Until next time, hope all your "Thoughts" are Good-
