In the Spirit of the Games
For the next few weeks many of us will be glued to our televisions (and laptops and tablets!) to view the Summer Olympic Games held in London. In the spirit of the games this innovative idea was too cute to pass up. Check out this SPORTOS clip and I think you will agree. These blocks look like just the thing to work on fine motor/visual perception and constructional praxis skills and the perfect activity to incorporate into a therapy session as it would also inspire conversation on current events. What about some other Olympic inspired treatment sessions? Scooter board relay races for "track and field" activities would be ideal for prone extension, co-contraction and motor planning skills for example. Or try a rocker board and/or low balance beam or painter's tape on the floor for standing and walking balance for your aspiring gymnast. You get the idea. Let me know your creative methods to make your kiddos all Olympic winners over the next few weeks!
And speaking of the real games, it seems we have an OT student joining the ranks of the US Track and Field team. Janay DeLoach will be competing in the long jump. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in OT at Colorado State University. You can follow her blog here. Let's wish Janay and all of our Olympic athletes inspiration, health, and success!
