Update on Budget Cuts: Are They Impacting Your Peds Practice?

Published March 29, 2013 11:12 AM by Cecilia Cruse

Last September I posted a blog about the BCA (Budget Control Act) and the impending cuts that would take effect. Now with the lack of a deal by our politicians, the resulting sequestration which calls for $1.2 trillion across the board budget cuts over the next 9 years technically began March 1st.  The latest information indicates that about $85 billion would be cut this year from military and domestic programs.  Bundled into this number includes funding that will be reduced for several initiatives that benefit those with disabilities including special education, housing assistance, employment supports, mental health services and research.  Most sources cite that it could be months before any clear of idea of the impact of the sequester will be felt, although there are already  a few indicators of change such as this update from Disability Scoop that includes the possible impacts being felt by non- profit organizations like Easter Seals, and as well as special education.  Headstart programs also seem to be beginning to feel some of the effects as these media releases from the NHSA would seem to indicate. Have the budget cuts impacted your practice and/or schools where you work?  Do drop me a line and let me know.
