HIV/AIDS Facts 2008

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation has updated its HIV/AIDS policy fact sheet. It provides an interesting summary of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States over the last 27 years.

  • Number of new HIV infections each year: 40,000
  • Number of people living with HIV/AIDS: 1.2 million, including more than 440,000 with AIDS
  • Number of AIDS deaths since beginning of epidemic: 565,927, including 14,627 in 2006
  • Percent of people infected with HIV who don’t know it: 25%
