PA Practice Ownership

Published April 25, 2008 2:58 PM by Stephen Cornell
The AAPA is actively lobbying in support of PA practice owners, according to the April 30 issue of AAPA News.

This seems like a bit of a change for the academy, which has never been particularly outspoken in its support of PA practice owners.

AAPA has initiated a lobbying effort aimed at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency that administers the Medicare program, to allow PAs to own 100 percent of a corporation that is eligible to bill Medicare. Presently, PAs may own up to 99 percent of an eligible corporation, as allowed by state law. A non-PA must own at least one percent of the corporation.

AAPA believes that there is no rational reason to prohibit PAs from having a 100 percent ownership interest in a Medicare-eligible corporation or similar entity.

As I've said before, there should be nothing controversial about PA practice ownership. PA practice ownership should be routine, and the AAPA should aggressively counter any opposition to PA practice ownership.

PAs are authorized to prescribe in every state.

There are many people who believe that PAs owning clinics and hiring physicians to supervise them is not an appropriate variation on the PA-physician team.

A little off subject. Can PA's write scripts in every state? I know a DEA  number is required and Medicaid has a new law about tamper proof prescription pads which we just scrambled to order because someone forgot at www.securerxpad.com.. plug for my sales rep, but who is the major opponent to PA Ownership?
