Civilian PA Program in Canada

Published April 28, 2008 5:40 PM by Stephen Cornell

The University of Manitoba will accept up to 12 PA students into its new two-year program this fall, according to the Winnipeg Sun.

WINNIPEG — The University of Manitoba says it will become the first school in Canada outside of the military to train physician assistants.

Physician assistants work under the supervision of doctors and can do physical exams, order tests, prescribe some medication and help with some surgeries.

There are over 70,000 assistants in the United States, and they have long been trained by Canada’s Armed Forces.

There are PA programs in several countries outside of the United States. I wonder if there will ever be a way for these internationally trained PA students to qualify to practice in the United States.
