More PAs in Florida

Nova Southeastern University is planning a fourth PA program in Florida, this one in Jacksonville. Nova Southeastern already has PA programs in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Naples.

JACKSONVILLE -- A new Jacksonville physician assistant graduate program will save prospective students a drive to Gainesville -- the closest existing program -- and eventually help increasingly burdened primary care doctors in the area.

Starting in June 2009, Nova Southeastern University's local campus will offer a 27-month program to about 36 students. The program, which teaches students how to perform tasks ranging from evaluating patients to performing minor surgeries, is aimed at meeting the area's growing need for physician assistants, said Richard Davis, dean of NSU's College of Allied Health and Nursing.
